Today’s Yojijukugo is 挙国一致 (きょこくいっち).

- 国民が心を一つにして団結すること。
- Literal translation: That fact that citizens unite as one heart.
- Meaning: National unity
- Composition:
- 挙国 (きょこく): This means “whole country” or “nationwide” as 挙 here signifies a wide array.
- 一致 (なげくび): it is a commonly used word for “agreement” and “union”.
- Notes:
- This term is particularly used in 挙国一致内閣 which means “National unity government” and represents governements consisting of broad coalitions in times of war for instance.
- The traditional version of 挙 is 擧.
- The traditional character for 国 is 國.
- Example:
- 誰でも挙国一致が欲しいと言っても、みんなの意見を一致するのがありえないと思います。
- だれでもきょこくいっちがほしいといっても、みんなのいけんをいっちするのがありえないとおもいます。
- Even if everybody wishes we could have national unity, I think it’s impossible to have everybody’s opinion in agreement.
