Today’s Yojijukugo is 霹靂一声 (へきれきいっせい).

- Definition: 突然雷がとどろくこと。また、突然大声で怒鳴ること。
- Meaning: A sudden thunder roaring. Also, a sudden yelling from someone.
- Composition:
- 霹靂 (へきれき): This word combines the character for “thunder” (霹) and “violent” or “lightening” (靂). As a result, it indicates a “loud thunder”. It implies also its sudden aspect.
- 一声 (いっせい): This combines the Kanji for “one” (一) and “Voice” (声). As a result, this insists on the “oneness” of the above sound.
- Notes:
- The traditional character for 声 is 聲.
- Example:
- ずっと寡黙だったお兄さんの霹靂一声に驚いた。
- ずっとかもくだったおにいさんのへきれきいっせいにおどろいた。
- I was surprised by the sudden yell from my brother who had always been quiet.
This Yojijukugo is in the Kanji Kentei Level 1 (一級) and doesn’t have a synonym.
