Today’s Yojijukugo is 変態百出 (へんたいひゃくしゅつ).
- Meaning:
- Definition: 形をいろいろと変え、また姿も変えること。
- Meaning: To change form and shape continuously.
- Composition:
- 変態 (へんたい): By combining the character for “change” (変) with the one for “figure” or “appearance”, this means “to transform” or “metamorphosis”.
- 百出 (ひゃくしゅつ): This word means “to arise in great numbers”. It is composed of the character for “hundred” (百) and the one for “to go out”, in this case implying the sense of “to appear”.
- Notes:
- The traditional character for 変 is 變.
- Careful not to write 変態 as 変体 (which then means “unusual form”).
- This Yojijukugo comes from the “Treatise on Literature” (藝文志) in the Book of Former Han. It appears as “然其變態百出。不可窮極。何其多也。“
